I never played this back in the day. It just seemed like a nicer graphic'd stadium. Plus, in 2004 I was still very bitter about Gen 1&2 not being able to transfer into Gen 3 and so my interest in catching 'em all had waned a lot.

Now with 3DS hacking, pkhex and emulators that can go high resolution AND play at 300% speed it seems it could be fun to go back and play through old games like this and transfer the 'mons all the way up to USUM.

How does Colosseum stack up to the other games? Is it necessary to play this one before Gale of Darkness? Any advice / things to look out for?

Doesn't really have any extra areas to explore and has little Pokemon options, so if you're more into the exploration/collection aspects of Pokemon it's probably not for you. I think all the battles are pretty fun, though.

is gale of darkness a worthy sequel to colosseum? right now my plan is to play colo, then leaf green so I can trade between them, then gale of darkness, then move them all into gen4.

Colosseum isn't very good. The main appeal back then was things like Johto mons, the grinding area, Ho-Oh, and a grittier story. Only the story is still a selling point today so just play GoD. Writing is worse but the gameplay is a shit ton better.

Also no, Colosseom isn't needed to play God story wise. There's references but it remains largely unconnected.

I'd say Colosseum and XD are both worth your time. There aren't any wild Pokemon, so be ready to work with what you get. This also makes the games considerably harder than others, especially Colosseum.
In Colosseum, the final boss battle comes after a gauntlet AND has Skill Swap Slowking next to Slaking. And every Shadow Pokemon can KO itself with recoil before you catch it, so prepare for that or take advantage of glitches to make it at least easier.
XD is Colosseum but better, so play Colosseum first.

Thanks for the warning about the difficulty. I assumed it'd be a cakewalk like all the handheld games. I was planning to use save states to basically ensure that I get the Pokemon I want. Save state already came in handy: who wants to reset the whole game when you can just load a save-state 5 or so seconds before you get your starting pokemon? After some time I settled with Impish Umbreon and Timid Espeon.

They give the feeling of very unpolished games. There are a lot of small annoyances like trainers spawning every time you leave the room, every single catchable Pokemon in the game having a move that can knock themselves out if you don't catch it within the first few balls, and the purification system being shit.

Pokeball glitch is as follows:
Use Pokeball you want to catch a mon in with first mon
On second mon, use items menu to switch places of that Pokeball with any other

Then, no Pokeballs get taken from your bag, hope you enjoy the game!

Since the last boss's Pokemon are sent out in a random order, you can usually kill either the Slaking or Slowking before the other one hits the field. You'll only see both at once if you're unfortunate enough for him to lead with both (or if he leads with Slacking and Machamp or Scizor, then has Slacking kill the other one with EQ).

What are you using to emulate the Game Cube games? How fast can it go? I'd be up for replayin those games if I can superspeed throught the sluggih parts.

Dolphin emulator.

I used Xpadder to custom bind my Left Bumper of my USB X360 Controller to "remove emulation speed limit" hotkey of Dolphin. I couldn't find a way to bind it to my controller otherwise.

My PC lets me go around 300% speed. Sometimes maybe faster in areas without much going on and maybe slower in areas with lots of animations, character models, etc. This will depend on how fast your PC is of course.
Unfortunately when you do this the music and sound effects sound like absolute garbage. So I was thinking of just keeping the OST open in a 2nd tab on YouTube or something...
The game IS kind of slow and sluggish so far as you mentioned. I think losing the sound/music is a worthy sacrifice.

I had to fight him like fifteen times because I was dumb enough to use a full team of six Pokemon who all ended up sorely underleveled for the final battle. I think I only saw the Slowking and Slaking lead combo once or twice.

I should add that sometimes when you're running at 300% speed it can be a bit too quick. Like when you're running around in Town, it can make it imprecise to actually go in that doorway or talk to that specific NPC, etc.
So you only hold down the Remove Speed Limit when it feels appropriate.
Maybe I could find a way to remove the emulation speed limit and instead add a hotkey to enforce it for when I need that precise movement, because 99% of the time playing at super speed is fine since it won't skip any dialogue anyway.

Colosseum shows its age. You won't have an apperication for the games unless you played them when they came out (or you just really love double battles)
It's sequel improves on it in nearly every way so you're honestly better off playing that.
