Why is it that monster games like SMT and Monster Rancher are called out as shameless ripoffs but clearcut ripoffs get little to no coverage?

Monster Rancher's gameplay and monster design (Prior to 3) was nothing like Pokemon's though.

It also came out in the US before Pokemon.
