After becoming league champion and receiving national pokedex, instead of being instant postgame, there is a route where you, the rival, the pseudorival, and a N\AZ\Lillie-like plot important character, team up to defeat the villain, and become four Legendaries themselves. After that, it's postgame, and you can switch between human and legendary form and even use the legendary form to battle other Pokémon, both the wild ones and the ones owned by trainers. So if you have six Pokémon in your party and transform into the legendary form, it's like having seven Pokémon in your party. Just you cannot catch Pokémon while in legendary form.
