Looks like his character completely went over your head. It's not that he can't commit to running a gym, he's so good at it that he got bored from the lack of challengers and wanted to quit so he could take on the league and become champion.

I've always really liked his design and personality; I wish he was a rival rather than just a Gym Leader.

>You can still fight him in post-game, and he gives out good rewards for each win
