It's mostly for convenience though, and as older consoles get harder to find if you lost/sold yours then being able to access those games gets harder and more expensive. It's important historically for archival purposes too, video games are a huge deal these days and are only going to get bigger so having as many classic releases available easily is important for the medium going forward and games aren't lost to time like many films, songs and books have been.
Basically they don't intend for people who already have an original copy and console to buy them, why so many people who already own them want to buy them again I don't know.
