Ultra Space in general completely kills any interesting lore discussion possible. Anything from now on can be explained by it, there's no fun anymore. It basically says that all games are canon in their own dimension.

basic timeline is:
gen 1 = gen 3 > gen 2 = gen 4 > bw > bw2 = gen 6 > gen 7
every game is canon, so every combination of games fits into that + versions with/without megas
this only changes with major event shifts like villians winning or whatever happened on the ub worlds

Link Cable was less forth wall meta and more the idea that when we trade and battle Pokemon with friends we're technically communicating with alternate versions of our player character.
