Once you reach the new island, you catch a new pokemon and box the original 3.
No grinding, no overleveling, no exp share etc.
Once you've reached endgame before the elite 4, you create a new team, choosing one pokemon from each of the boxed island teams.
So far this has lead to a very satisfying challenge, with multiple attempts and team tweaking per trial, currently getting walled by a Guzma who can one shot half my team, but I know victory is only a few tweaks away.
Just thought i'd share my personal challenge setup, it's paying off for me in a way other runs havent.
Do yourself a favor and use it as an opportunity to use pokemon you never would of in the past.
