How do you decide what team to use?

In both campaign and competitive. For me:

Campaign:
>starter
>bird
>4 other cool-looking Pokemon with decent stats

Competitive:
>choose one Pokemon I really want to use
>choose 3 other mons that complement each other's weaknesses
>physical wall
>special wall
>limit myself to 2 same-type mons per type

Look for the dex, choose the 6 companions that Im going to use. Sometimes this changes depending on how late in the game are this pokemon or if I have access to trade early.

Campaign:
6 evolved mons i like who must be from the new gen. If it's a third game/a remake: the rule only is 6 evolved mons i like.

Competitive: it depends on what I want the team to be revolving around.
I don't play anymore anyway because smogon has gone to shit and litterally became a circlejerk who bans mons because they want to and not because they need to.

I try to have a decent type spread with a preference for Pokemon originating from the current region (or evolutions introduced in that region). I like to have a grass, fire and water Pokemon because it follows the dynamic set up by the starters, but beyond that I just pick whatever to get full type coverage.

Sometimes I keep my starter, sometimes I box it. How do other people feel about that aspect?

I only box my starter when going into a gym it's bad against. There's never really been a gen where I hated all three, so I usually keep him on my main team the whole way through.
