>>34162479What I mean by that is I miss the idea that HMs are supposed to represent: a way that your Pokemon help you traverse through the landscape. Yes, it's fucking annoying to be going up to the Elite Four with one of them knowing Cut and another knowing Fly, but at least you know that those Pokemon were vital to your journey, even if you just threw them into the Box.
I have a Braviary in my Sun file, and even though I know it can fly me anywhere thanks to gens V and VI, I can't get it to fly me to the other islands. I can't even get it to fly me within the same island. All it's good for is battling. I need Charizard to fly, and not even my own. I also have a Slowbro. I definitely know it can surf me around since I used it back in Blue. But no matter how much I try, it won't let me. I have to call on Lapras or Sharpedo to do it. All that Slowbro is good for is coming out of its ball, wiping the floor with some NPC, and going back into its ball. All it's good for is battling.
HMs don't have to take up a move slot. It can just be that getting a badge/completing a trial allows you to use the innate ability of the Pokemon to fly, surf, cut, or whatever. But the way that GF has gone at it, where you have to call for help from some other Pokemon, not even from your own team, is what really bothers me.
I know not everyone wants to have a dedicated flyer of surfer in their team, and rentals can be there for them, but not everyone wants to surf on Lapras.
