ONix should have a base 80 attack. It's massive size, how powerful it is in the anime, and because it's the first real boss of the red and blue games are reasons why it should have more attack. For god's sake cranidos has 125 attack, if people can handle that then a buffed onix should be a breeze.

I don't think it should be that high. Maybe base 65. Steelix should have an attack stat at least over 100 however. It's based on an ironclad wyrm for fucks sake.

That would break the early game.

However, the programmers should have made it possible to give his father(?) a Metal Coat once you get it, making a Steelix trade possible if you wait long enough.

Another valid theory. Plus some anon mentioned that by having Bellsprout instead of Onix the kid would have an easier time catching more Bellsprout, having traded away a double weakness in exchange for a double resistance.
