A lot of Nintendo games over the last few years have had near decade-old 4chan memes in them; not because the people in charge of localization are referencing ancient memes, but because these memes AREN'T ancient on more mainstream "internet culture" communities, since it usually takes a little while for them to percolate out of 4chan onto Reddit, Tumblr etc.
The optimal solution is just to not use memes in your fucking game translation.
