The shading style is very bright and cartoonish; it's pretty clear that the outlines are meant to be part of the visual style. Nothing feels separated from the backgrounds or look like they have much depth without the outlines.
If there was also a mod that changed the entire game's shading style to a darker and more gradient one, then sure.
