Honestly SM was pretty forgettable once you finish watching Lillie's family drama VN. Nothing was ever truly resolved, and their absence created a void that made you realize how empty and dull Alola truly is.

At least USM offers some semblance of closure and feels more like a more complete story

Agreed. They may not be thematically integrated into the setting but they are written as such a huge focus, without them it just feels like you're left in a random tropical theme park.
They should have never made the story so dependent on them. that's how we got into this mess with USUM and the jarring introduction of the URS/Necrozma story.

Nihilego was great. Necrozma's got some neat lore with its light form, but honestly Nihilego was so much more sinister and mysterious without even trying. It really felt alien and intimidating, which I've never gotten from a single antagonist in this franchise before

Actually Gladion and Lusamine were in a few of the same scenes in the latest episode because Faba was trying to open the Ultra Wormhole and had apparently hid Type:Null from Gladion in the labs.

Better question, why run from the aeither foundation instead of taking Type Null and showing it to Lusamine and Wicke, you know the people who fucking run the place, and get Faba's creepy ass fired? It's so fucking weird because even in the rocket rainbow arc with Faba admitting to Lillie that he caused Lusamine's kidnapping the asshole just gets busted down to an intern and Lillie's attempt at telling on him is treated as comedic along with Lusamine's scary look she throws him. The guy nearly had Lusamine brainwashed by strangers and almost got Lillie killed and he gets off scott free? Dude is still a league challenger,too and clearly shows no regret for his actions nor a desire to stop his ambitions. Why? If he gets the same treatment in the anime despite the very real danger he put Lillie in front of a very protective Lusamine here, I fucking hate the writers.

I figured Type:Nulls treatment and Aethet's plans to freeze him was why Gladion was angry with Lusamine and ran away, but this kind of removes Gladion's motivations for acting the way he did.

Apparently it was deemed a failure at that role, so it was being shelved. Which kind of makes sense when a natural Pokemon like A-Marowak is a much more effective counter to the beasts.

Nihilego was also an instigator. Sure it was just carrying out it's natural behavior but it was still the result of it's own actions.
Necrozma feels a lot more like the typical box legendary in past games that is just acting out due to human influence. The problem is that influence in the past games usually comes from the main villain. And i'm not sure the Ultra Recon Squad fit that role. Even if they are stuck up and incompetent, you actively aid them.

Hey, maybe it's because I haven't watched pokemon since the Hoenn arc, and even then I watched it semi-sporadically, but this is pretty fucking good compared to before.

Feels like an anime with pokemon instead of a Pokemon Anime, with all the cheesiness that entails. Is the entire Alola series like this?

...did you completely miss the part in the anime where he yells at her because of Lillie's issue with touching pokemon or what. Their relationship is strained but anime Lusamine still loves her kids. Gladion likely still cares for her as well.

Honestly, her pokephobia was just a dumb excuse for why she isn't a trainer to begin with.

She never had it in the games, she could touch Nebby and stuff it in the bag no problem. She wasn't a trainer because she was mommy's good little girl who did everything she asked and acted as an outlet for Lusamine's Nihilego fantasies.

But now that they decided to make Lusamine more likeable via shitty comedy they had to think of a different excuse for why she wasn't a trainer but still liked trainers and wanted to be one. Snowball/Shiron was a bonus and an anime replacement for Nebby since anime Nebby is acting more like one of Ash's pokemon.

No, most of the episodes are cancer filler worse than before. These are major plot episodes and the quality is higher than normal because they're crucial to the story. All of the captains are awful and suck, Team Rocket is the only reason to watch but only for Bewear and Mimikyu. Nebby is Togepi 2.0 but with Ash instead of Misty. Dusk Lycanroc is kind of interesting but we'll have to see.

Aether family is the main reason I watch at all.

Lysandre is a shitty edgy villain. Making him fapbait (Lusamine) only lessens the garbage factor by a very small number

It’s bullshit that they’re trying to redeem Lusamine’s char through combined effort of the games & anime when the most interesting part about her was when she went crazy and turned into a monster. The anime especially sucks because it would’ve looked really cool in animation, but chances are they scrapped it just to get right into the Necrozma invasion and play Ash out to be the big-dicked hero of that. Only hope is if Special edges it up like usual and turns Lusamine into a full-on monster again, it’s the only logical choice after trapping Pryce in a time-loop & trapping Archie & Maxie’s souls in Giratina-land or some shit.
The VAwork is legitimately good, Ash & Rotom aside, and it’s the only redeemable thing about this series.
