I don't know about wasted potential, because I can't think of much they could do only with it, but treating it like this big selling point was pretty fucking dumb when it's ultimately so brief and inconsequential.

But then again this is the same company that hyped up the Distortion World as if it was going to be some huge Light/Dark World thing that would be an important mystery throughout the game and instead you get a lame dungeon shoehorned in at the climax with absolutely nothing going on in it.

This is why Gamefreak needs to make dlc or ingame updates a thing. I don't even care anymore if it's free or you gotta pay for it, this is something that could easily be fixed by the practice if they didn't have enough time/resources to expand upon it.

I've just been playing Monster Hunter Stories and that game is half the size of SM (1.7GB).. yet it's worlds apart from Gen VII games. Though it also has some framerate issues, it has a bigger world, more exploration, better customisation, more beautiful environments than sun and moon. And SKIPPABLE cutscenes AND DLC. Now that game I can say pushes the 3DS limits to the max.
GF is just garbage at optimising and designing anything in non grid based 3D. Beggars belief as to why they didn't start mass hiring or outsourcing when they started working with the 3DS.

You've got a reputation to maintain when you're as big as Pokemon though. Plus, most of the time and money goes into the first entries of each generation, as opposed to things like enhanced versions. I'm sure there are freelancers they hire just for a single game's dev cycle.

I was playing Dragon Quest VIII. The world in that is absolutely huge, it's a treat if for exploration lovers, it's so fucking good.

Too bad it underuses the New 3DS, but otherwise it also pushes the 3DS to its limit just by the sheer size of the environments, and the monster models are amazing.
Two bad things about the 3DS port are the music in the western version which is shitty MIDI and the interface which is that awful black box setup that Japs love for nostalgia reasons, but the music can be fixed with a patch if you have CFW.

I genuinely think people who still adamantly defend Game Freak ONLY play Pokemon, they don't know other games. That's the only reasonable explanation to some of the stuff they manage to defend.

This conversation reminds me of other open fantasy world related game called Fantasy Life made by yours truly Level 5.
You are not determined to stay on one class, but you can choose any class (12 classes where you level them
up when you progress) you want at any given time. And the class mission aren’t tied to the main story either. There are side quests too, open world for you to explore, your hero to customize to your liking and clothes and accessories aren’t gender locked. And the DLC gives (that you have to pay for) gives you additional island to explore, fight higher level enemies, more side quests to do and cool clothes and weapons). There is free DLC you can download with codes found on the internet or the wiki and even without the payable DLC island the game is pretty fun and full content!

Honestly, Level-5 just really knows what they're doing when it comes to the 3DS hardware. Fantasy Life, Yokai Watch 2, LBX, all of those games were fucking huge and packed with content yet still remained smaller than the 3DS Pokemon games in terms of file size.

Why put in effort when millions will buy the game anyway? You can release two beta versions of the game, then release two versions of the finished product less than a year later. And, here's the real genius behind it, by locking content to different versions, you essentially get people to pay 33% more for the full experience. And with the inevitable next gen releases, you can charge 200% more for the full experience, Bank and Nintendo Online fees excluded. Hell, with how stupid the fanbase is, put in lootboxes for ultra rare Pokemon.

That is horrible design choice. Things that are in the player's view should be accessible, not just decoration. I can make an exception for building interiors if there are a lot of buildings, but not for visible paths.

For some reason XY and ORAS felt like they were specifically made for the 3ds, but Sun Moon and USUM feel like a switch test engine with a lowered resolution shoved on the 3ds. I think switch development started somewhere shortly before sun moon
