I would like the games to be actually balanced around having experience share off when we turn it off.

Turning it off doesn't make the CPU any smarter, it doesn't give them more pokemon to use against you.
All it does it forcing you to stay on the route for a bit longer since you have to grind more.

Turning exp share off isn't upping the difficulty, it's slowing your progress.

Obviously some aspects of these ideas would be more or less prominent depending on where in the game the player is e.g. early game vs late game vs post game. Again, I'm writing this more for anyone making their own pokemon-like game or pokemon fan game, because we know GameFreak doesn't give a shit.

Difficulty is not just measured in time required to complete a task. A harder game doesn't require you to spend more time to proceed, it requires you to be better at the game to proceed.

You don't auto complete Portal just because you spent an hour on it. You have to be good enough to figure out the answer.

You misunderstand cause vs effect. Time required to beat a game in an effect of the game's difficulty.

Think of it like trying to lift a boulder vs moving sand. Lifting a boulder is difficult task because it requires a certain amount of skill (or strength in this case) whereas moving sand requires a very little amount of skill (strength), but a higher skill can let you complete the task faster.

The point is that turning of EXP share keeps you from overlevelling your team. You don't have to grind levels -- you could just as easily spend your time planning a better team and putting together strategies to overcome difficult obstacles with under-leveled pokémon.

I played Sun with exp share off and it was still easy, I only grinded for 1 trial beacuse the type advantage was fucking me, in the league my mons were all 5-10 lvl lower than the oponents.

Dificulty is not about how much time you spend completing something it's about how complicated and complex the solution is.

Yeah, if you're a huge fucking brainlet. You can easily get through the game without grinding and with relatively low-level mons if you know how to put together a decent team and if you know how abilities, items, and movesets interact.

Grinding is really only useful if you want to brute force your way through the game -- if you actually want to engage with the battle mechanics on a more intricate level, you don't need brute force.

Waiting 20 minutes for your brownies to bake is not difficult; it is time-consuming. Difficulty is a measure of how hard a task is to complete, not how long it takes. I mean, do you think sleeping for eight hours is more difficult than speed running Dark Sous in an hour and a half?

Usually I'll just use my favourites or Pokémon I haven't tried out before, but if it looks like I'm going to have some trouble, or if my team is significantly underleveled, I'll occasionally plan a team to account for some workarounds (like, say, introduce a sort of bulky baton-passer to buff up my more fragile attackers, or look for a decent stallmon or something).

All I really mean is that, as you progress, you have to put some thought into your team to account for its shortcomics, not that you necessarily need to plan it down to each individual Pokémon, it's moveset, etc.

If the player is shit at teambuilding then yes they'll get shit on by certain NPCs. That's not only based on team composition but also moves and items. Teambuilding is a strategy. If you're playing as a karenfag then yes you might need to grind, but that's your own fault, not the fault of the game.

Reminder that set playstyle only makes it a pain to train. I do however send them out in the order I train them regardless of type effectiveness and let it at least take one attack if it's at full HP or eventually switch it out if I feel like it's gonna be knocked out. But I always send out that Pokémon regardless.

Actually, there are a fair few RPGs with things such as puzzle bosses where you need to do things in one of a few specific ways to defeat the boss, else even levels won't help you out. And some others also do things like effectively cap your levels

Pokemon could really use more puzzle bosses - Trials were a step in the right direction with forcing you to go through the whole thing without healing and with summons who could potentially make it a puzzle boss (heck, if we still had hoard battles, imagine a totem Pokemon that used mostly dance moves and started off the fight with one of each of the Oricorio? Or one with mons that use things such as follow me or heal pulse, forcing you to either figure out how to kill the boss in one or two turns or otherwise eliminate its help?)

Plus there's another reason I said Trials were a step in the right direction - things like Castform using Sunny Day to allow Lurantis to use Solar Blade without charging is an example of this. Or Totem Ribombee summoning cleric Pokemon that can heal damage and status from it

Pokemon just needs to explore the concept more, and it could be done with the existing mechanics

This doesn't really make the game any more difficult in single player though. If there was an advantage to switching you are still going to get to it before the battle ends, you just end up with more KOed Pokemon after the battle.

I don't think Pokémon games should necessarily be difficult, just that they should be a fun experience, I will say however that that they should do a better job at introducing the player to competitive battling, especially when their Official Format is Pick 4 Doubles and their games are basically entirely Single Battles with Full teams, which you know, would be fine if we still had Side games like XD/Colo and PBR to give players that introduction to Doulbe Battles at the very least, but those stopped coming out since Gen 5.

you literally do not need the exp share if you know how to use your team smart enough to swap in everyone to get exp
i played on set mode with no exp share and the game had a pretty balanced difficulty imo
totems required strategy, which i felt was nice

Yes, it was a space saving technique that makes it so a pokémon only has it's last 4 Level Up Moves, trainers in gyms or places like Victory Road have customiseable items, movesets and whatnot, but that takes up more space on the cartridge, also all the way back in Gen 3 there were 7 different AI levels for fights, with 7 being the hardest AI, used by the Champion and the E4.

To be fair the only reason Lusamine is hard is because her team is stacked with stat boosts before battle, same issue I have with trials, they're not only 2v1 battles, they're 2v1 battles where one mon gets a stat boost before the fight and can constantly ressurect it's ally, it lost this ideal of "anything the trainers can do, even Gym Leaders and the E4, you can do as well".

The games have to be easy for kids not to get too easily frustrated but for older generations it would be nice to have a difficulty menu option. It wouldn't even take much to implement certain strategies (existing already in post-game content) and transpose some of them in-game.

GameFreak has toyed around with the idea of difficulty levels, a la dumb B2W2 shit you had to beat the game and trade keys to a friend for.
