I do think the 3ds era has been mediocre as a whole but I really liked Megas, UBs, Alolan forms, and the Fairy type and think they're the best things they introduced. What's truly dissapointing is how sudden they halted the development of megas after ORAS, and even worse is how there's no new Alolan forms in USUM.
In regards to Kanto pandering and lack of content, some other anons and I theorized this a week back, that we believe Masuda took some of the backlash towards Gen 5 too literally(especially since it was the Gen he worked the hardest on apparently), and came to the conclusion that fans would rather have nostalgia pandering. But that's just a theory.
Now in terms of content, that was actually addressed by Masuda himself in ORAS. He believes the current generation of kids are too focused on cellphones to pay attention to good, replayable content, so he feels there's no need to include stuff like the BF or probably PWT too.
TL;DR-The reason Pokemon is so mediocre these days is because Gen 5 got too much flak and cellphone kiddies have short attention spans.
