SM for me is unbearable to play through, with it being so slow. From what I have heard, USUM is the same up until the dragon trial. Is the game worth playing before that point?

Yes because you should always keep your Pokémon games up to date, even if they are shit. Just sell SM and use that to help you buy USUM.

So no. If you didn't like playing through SM, you definitely won't enjoy playing a "3rd version" of it.
