The only thing I knew about the game was that the Legendaries got Necrozma'd and that Lycanroc got a new form. I didn't even know about Team Rocket being in the game until someone told me about it when I started the game.

You should have already noticed some plot changes if you cleared MeleMele Island.

You get your starter right away, Hau picks his starter after you, you encounter the Ultra Recon Squad several times, you battle Team Skull in Hau'oli City rather than the docks, you stop Team Skull from attacking the beach on Route 2, you encounter Cosmog in the cave leading to Kala'e Bay and battle URS, and you Mantine Surf your way to Island #2.
