It's because you're at a point in the game where both your TM selection and stats are limited. Early game can fuck you over just because you don't have access to the things that generally make your runs easier.

I went in hoping to steal Wishiwashi's Sitrus Berry and then pray for para/confuse hacks. All that went out the window when my Thief user ate a Leech Life after stealing its Wacan Berry. Hawlucha totally walled it, though.

My Hawlucha got 2shot by Totem Araquanid's bubble. Was your Hawlucha super overleveled?

I think it was maybe one or two levels over Totem Araquanid. Its Bubble was very close to 2shoting it, but that last sliver let me attack in between heals.

Could've also just been a difference in EVs, IVs, Natures, or a mix of the three.

As for the fire one I admit I had gotten it evolved by then. What got me was the fact that it used a first turn detect when I tried to use hydro-vortex. Clever fucker that one.

That goes for literally any pokemon who doesn't have Taunt which no elite 4 or champion even have. Curse combined with protect is more broken than any legendary on your team.
