If they had to release a patch to allow trading back to SM they may as well have made USUM a patch entirely. Makes them less money that way so no.

3DS games aren't really set up to allow patching of new data. You can overwrite existing data (which is how DLC works, IIRC, I think they generally have dummy data specifically in the game that'll be overwritten) but adding new Pokemon to an existing game isn't really something that's doable.

Sounds to me like you're talking out of your ass. Are you seriously suggesting Smash Bros. had 7 dummy character slots that were overwritten?

It's entirely possible to patch S/M to add compatibility, there is just no way they'll actually do it.

Can you mention what 3DS game did overwrite data to get DLC working? Genuinely curious. It just sounds incredibly inefficient and I seriously doubt Nintendo would do something like this. They're much more competent than that.
