I guess it could just be me, but I feel like it's so hard for me to become immersed in a video game like I used to. Pokemon used to do it for me every time but the series isn't growing with me. Maybe I'm being a snowflake

Right on the money. Reason why Gen V was the best Pokemon experience since Gen I and II was because I went into it not knowing about what to find, and all of the mons were new. If people will complain about how they can't use the same Pokemon in a new setting, just enable an option in the beginning that allows you to choose which regional pokedex to use, which becomes the same postgame. Heck, even allows for more replayability.

I hear that from many people, so I don't think it's just you.
I have anxiety and agoraphobia, so video games end up being a big escape for me. There is a big feeling of fantasy and being immersed in this big adventure exactly because my world is so restricted, so my situation isn't that normal.
Maybe you can find ways to make yourself feel more immersed, though? Roleplaying the game, making the character or yourself...

By Game Freak actually letting you go on an adventure instead of railroading you and blockading you at every opportunity. Can't even explore the route directly next to the new city most of the time without some asshat pointing me to the nearest exposition dump.

Yeah yeah, I know roadblocks have been around since the beginning, but it was nearly as crazy as they do in XY and (U)S(U)M. Can't even explore the other half of a city at first without following the Yellow Brick Road beforehand. Seriously, fuck off with that I just wanna see shit man!

I think a lot of it has to do with the internet. And being a stupid kid, but mostly the internet.

Back when red and blue were out, I remember every minute being exciting and making me like I was really on an adventure. Back when we were kids, we had no idea how games were made, or what kind of limitations they had. For example, I remember losing my shit when I found out about missingno. I mean, if something like THAT was possible, what else could happen?

I don't think anything like that will ever possible again though

But you can still get some amazement from recognizing the limitations and how far they can push it, though. For example- hmm, the second generation. I remember it was a big deal how much content they packed into the small memory of the gameboy cartridge - there's some appreciation I feel when I replay it that I couldn't really understand before.

There are multiple ways games innovate and push their media - there's some really impressive stuff hidden just beneath the surface. Maybe you just need to find that to at least get some of that spark again?

Less hand holding. I picked up black some years ago, and got annoyed very quickly at the extended tutorials, the lengthy, gentle learning curve; the overall slowness of the game. It really felt to me gen 1 and 2 just dropped you into the world and said go fend for yourself.

Even the gen 1 remakes add too much hand holding, and it ruins them.

I don't know how to avoid it. If you have a YouTube account and any PokeTubers in your history or subscribed list, you're screwed. I avoided YouTube at all costs with Sun and Moon pre-release information, and then Facebook ads spoiled them for me nearly every time.

I'm a student of digital media who uses YouTube to document my work. It's hard to stay off the grid for the year that a Pokémon game is announced. Hell even LinkedIn spoiled me once.

Same for me. I wasn't following the news and trailers for XY too much and made sure to avoid spoilers and I enjoyed it a lot. I found it really annoying how the trailers for SM showed to much.

I think GF shouldn't show too much fanservice in the next games too. My very first video game was Pokémon Blue and I loved it, but I'm getting a bit sick seeing how there's fanservice for genwunners because it becomes more and more predictable. I want to be surprised more than anything these days because there's spoilers for everything everywhere.

Anon of the gen V comment here, I went into the games knowing only the entire Pokédex. I bought White for the version exclusives and I had my first team all planned out. What I didn't know is the specific look of each location and the plot. I feel that for gen 8, GF's advertising team should focus on showing off Pokemon, noteworthy characters, stuff you can do with your own Pokemon (i.e. contests, amie, and the like), and only a very few locations. News release should be managed so it isn't as much as S/M's pre-release, but not as little as US/UM's pre-release. In the end, it's the Pokemon that matter most, and they should be given the most focus during pre-release.

Also unrelated but it would be nice if they could give every town some sort of unique reason to go back to it, I feel like over time a lot of the towns have basically become worthless stopovers where the only building that matters is the pokemon center. Would be nice to have reason to go back to most of the towns, or at least more reason to stick around one once you got there, rather than just rushing through all the towns and routes, easily beating the game in a day or two, and then not having anything new to discover as has been the case with the more recent games.

Do you have any idea why GF took the time to put so many retarded cutscenes? If the general consensus is that GF is lazy, then I dont understand this. Also theres nothing fun in playing for 3 seconds and then be interrputed by a cutscene and then rinse and repeat, then I keep pressing A to skip through the text and I realise the cutscene has already ended and I didnt notice. Its so goddamn exhausting.

A game like black/white again. Going out and not know what pokemon Id find. Searching and just finding all new stuff all over. Black and White was very close to that first experience by being 100% new pokemon on the journey.
