Come up with a viable battle plan. Totem Pokemon don't call their ally pokemon under certain circumstances. Know what typing are good for that pokemon as well. You'll almost always need to cripple the totem mons.

Gastly. Curse kills literally every single totem in the entire game, and U-Necrozma too. Literally every fight could be trivialized by a level 1 Mimikyu, if you decided to breed midgame. Barring that, Gengar's fast enough to handle pretty much every totem barring the last.

I had brionne, it did chip damage at most with water gun (its strongest move) and was quickly shut down by the insane attack stat on the totem.

I had to get its accuracy to -6 in order to actually beat it.
