if you are on a N3DS, it's much easier since you have the option to manage files on the microsd wirelessly. photos will still be inside the DCIM folder of the microsd.
for those of you with an O2DS, can't help you there since I never owned one, but for the N2DS, I'd imagine the process would be the same as the N3DS.
