Serious answer: I don't think it has.
I think we're in a trough right now with SM/USUM but whether it's a trend or not will depend on Gen 8. That said, I really didn't like how Gen 3 implemented the changes to make the meta better.

Gen 3 didn't have a "I want to rule with X legendary" plot, though. That was gen 4. Gen 3 was also, well, kind of original for the series at the time. They've beaten the fuck out of that horse now though.

BW came out in my last year of high school. I remember playing them guiltily instead of studying and being worried about getting into the University course I want. 7 years of burn-out and halfway through a post-graduate degree I never thought I'd be doing later, and they make me oddly nostalgic.

Kinda weird how there's a Pokemon game for every milestone in your life.

I hate that GF have continuously made changes to the single player based on this line of thought. Who cares about a good region to explore, just make everything about the meta-competitions because the most vocal fans care about that.
