After Pokemon for Nintendo Switch was officially announced at E3, fans began to speculate about what gameplay style Game Freak will be going with. For some, the technology upgrade is also a chance to improve Pokemon, and it sounds like Game Freak is taking the chance, according to Easy Allies.

The podcast recently revealed that Game Freak is looking to do something “disruptive” with the franchise, due to the success of both Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey.

Well, I'd say that at the time that was relatively disruptive. I'd say it was a larger mechanic change than the Phys/Spec split, even if it didnt affect as many pokemon.

That being said I agree with what you're saying overall. Gamefreak has done nothing to earn my trust that they'll succesfully shake the series up in a meaningful way.

That would piss me off beyond belief. The battle system is probably the one, truly solid aspect of the series. Theyve got a shit ton of stuff that needs to be fixed/changed to make for an actual fun adventure instead.

The last thing that even makes Pokemon still stand out aside from its creatures is the turn based system. Take that away and you're left with just the monsters and quite honestly as much as I love them, I would probably just switch to Monster Hunter since you will be left with the cute vs badass debate and we all know who wins that in the eyes of the general public (or just kids).

As the games are, its not exploration. None, whatsoever, you're dragged to everything new and anything youre not shown immediately is almost completely unimportant. If the games started to follow more typical tropes like full character customization, the ability to choose where you head storyline wise to at least some degree, and a longer more in depth main story (ie not your predictable "go to 7 gyms/trials back to back, fight big bad team and catch legend, fight 8th gym/trial, E4, over."), pokemon games would actually become fullfilling and enjoyable to complete. Not just time wasters until you can start grinding for comp or battle tree or some shit.

Considering the increased philosophy of "if it looks good, then it's good" they seemed to push on USUM (pretty much all the new areas are just pretty hallways, and I'm still mad about Ultra Megalopolis), and of coursw the infamous interview of Masuda saying they'll cut content becaus apparently all kids are ADHD retards and won't enjoy it, I don't expect much.

Mario Odyssey took a break from some of its traditions like the lives systems and Mushrooms as power-ups.

Breath of the Wild took a break from railroading in a 3D Zelda game, its inventory system and expands on the enemy-acquired weapons system that Wind Waker did.

Those games were disruptive for forgoing something usually common enough to be considered a franchise staple in terms of gameplay element. It could be as little as changing the inventory system to making visible Pokemon encounters.

The gameplay is more than the battle system. If Pokemon was literally just its battle system, and there was no overworld, no non-held items, banned Pokemon for certain tiers, banned moves, banned combinations of Pokemon and combinations of items, and one hundred 19 year old college dropouts stalling for 100 turns while toxic kills everything, then I wouldn't play.

I'm not denying that they changed up things quite a bit, I'm just saying that I hope the switch game actually lets me play the game. I'm currently playing UM, and I hate that the game has to take the controls from me every few minutes to be like "Hey wait, heres a thing we need to say!", especially when a lot of it could be shown via signs or something. Like, did we really need Lillie to walk us into the Pokecenter and explain what everything is?

I don't know about you but I found Earthbound annoying as fuck simply because I could see the encounters coming.

You mean all sense of walking around the same area for an hour and hoping for the Pokémon you’re looking for?

They could probably still have bird shadows and stuff like that, and for more rare encounters you could do specific things in an area to keep the sense of discovery. Or maybe, if you spend too long in an area more powerful mons will start to appear, culminating in a really high level one appearing that will wreck your shit if you aren’t prepared for it.

I just hope we can visit every region, I think its time we get to see Kanto and Johto better. I dont think we NEED new pokemon, if it means they have to just stick us in one new region again, maybe give us the pokemon world as it is now and when theres new regions just make some DLC, good way to keep the game lucrative over time too... I hope its basicaly BOTW style but with pokemon amd more character customazations... ooo, and riding pokemon... stuff like that.. just a big online pokemon mmorpg

I'd kind of like a more open ended Pokemon game. Not really MUH SANDBOX OPEN WORLD, but maybe something along the lines of completing gyms in any order after a certain point (kinda like Gen 1), or maybe not having gyms at all again and adding another mechanic that works as a power check.

I dunno. I never want to be ideas guy when it comes to shit like this, cause it's always easy to say what you think will work compared to the execution.

People fall for the open world meme too much but I instead of having a vast world I prefer a little one with lots of details and the game being driven by the narrative but this does not get in the way of playing, kinda what Soulsborne did, those games clearly were narrarive driven and the plot was everywhere but the times it was intrusive you can count them with 1 hand.

I can't believe how close-minded some people can be. I love pokemon for the adventure, towns, exploration, music, all the extra stuff. And most of all, the pokemon themselves aka catching. The battles are just one small part of the whole. Hell, if all you care about battles, I could say the same to you and just say "go play showdown if that's all that matters".
