Hah, practically the same thing happened to my friend. He let his 7-year-old nephew try his copy of Moon while he was staing over one weekend and he got very frustrated at all the cutscenes, dialogue and tutorial shit.

While it's possible you might have made this up to shitpost, I will corroborate the fact that it does happen. Pokemon games are always a little front-heavy, though. I remember back in the day letting a friend try out my copy of Blue on the bus ride home. He hardly got to do anything before we were at his stop, but at least that game throws you into some minor traveling and battling before it turns you loose, instead of forcing nothing but tutorials, character introductions and dialogue down your throat.

Was Gen 4 really that slow-paced? I haven't played Pearl since 2007 (holy shit) and while I remember the battle speed being a bit sluggish, the games pace seemed fine. I replayed Platinum just a few years ago and didn't have any issues.

Slow pacing is not the same as slow gameplay. Gen 4 had the latter, not the former. Although I wonder how these ADHD babbies would have done if their first exposure to DP were ROMs on an 07 potato like it was for me.

Railroading and linearity aren't what we're complaining about, though. Pokemon games have always been pretty linear. Ever since the open world meme began, people complain about linearity in any game, as though it's inherently bad, when it isn't.

I don't mind a game where I can only go one direction, as long as the game lets me go that direction by my fucking self. S/M is cutscenes and dialogue where you get told where to go next, then a waypoint appears on the map and once you get there, you get more dialogue, and then someone asks politely to battle, gives you a chance to save your game and then heals your Pokemon for you. Older Pokemon games were never terribly challenging, but this is just insulting.

I honestly found I was more patient as a child, when it came to video games. I was willing to absorb everything as part of the experience, and do my best to make the most of every aspect of a game, usually because when your a kid, you have to make the most of what you've got. Years of doing that have taught me that it's rarely worth it, and now that I'm an adult with lame obligations and a full time job, I just want to do the fun parts. I don't want to have some shitty anime characters blathering on about some stupid plot that barely makes sense and doesn't matter.

Some degree of railroading is good, kids actually get stuck in gen 1 and don't know what to do. Partially because they have other games they can play when they get stuck.

But even in elementary school I remember some kids wouldn't know where to go and end up with a level 70 Blastoise but only 3 gym badges.

Not saying I dislike this, but SM/USUM does this too. People get interactive dialogue and cutscenes mixed up. in SM,there was around total of 20 minutes of cutscenes. That isn't even bad. If Gen VII's interactive dialogue were as bland as the DS games, it would look shit considering the true 3D environment.

I just wish people learned the difference between interactive dialogue and cutscenes (like the Spearow ambush scene) and stop pushing the cutscene meme forward.

Pretty much yeah. People are saying the game is mostly cutscenes when in reality, it's mostly interactive (unskippable) dialogue. Every single Pokémon game has unskippable dialogue. So saying that those are cutscenes is kinda misleading and annoying.

SM has around 20 minutes of actual cutscenes (in total, including the introduction and the credits). Being that these games are more story focused, and are running on a 3D engine, it doesn't bother me. It's possible that I like cutscenes because I have a degree in Computer Animation, so things like this I like to analyse to some extent.

Anyways, you may or may not be right about knowing about Missingno in '99 and having a GameShark to be always true, but can't you agree it sounds very counterintuitive? It makes little sense. If you knew how to get Mew without it, you wouldn't buy it. If you didn't know, you'd buy it. I didn't know, so I bought one. At first I didn't know how to use it, so I dropped it for some time, until I used it on Gold and LG later on. At about the same time, I learned about Missingno, and got a Mew the "legit" way on Red. Is that better? Did you really need my blogpost?

lol, I have literally the same amount of evidence as you, you fucking goober. I recently played BW2, and I was nowhere near as annoyed by the dialogue or interruptions as I was in SM -- in fact, I'm currently watching through some playthroughs, and I can tell you exactly why:

Beyond the introductory ~30 minutes (which yes, is hell), you're essentially off-rails, and the subsequent interruptions are minor -- small bits of dialogue (usually two to five lines total) that don't require a fade-in/fade-out and accompanying animation (both of which pad the length of the dialogue). Plus, it never feels as though you're pulled out of your character, because you (generally -- apart from in phone calls) maintain the same position, so the illusion of control isn't broken to nearly the extent as the roaming-camera cutscenes (or whatever you want to call them) in SM.

So yeah, based on what I can tell (based on my recent playthrough and based on current playthroughs I'm watching), the dialogue scenes weren't nearly as protracted or frequent as they are in SM.

Having fade in/out doesn't make them cutscenes. It's possibly to do with how the engine loads and renders the situation, with 'actors' entering and leaving, performing actions, etc. I feel the camera angles also have something to do with this, but IDK, I'm not a game creator.

Back to your point, they're just enhanced unskippable dialogue. Every Pokémon game has them, it's just that with Gen VI/VII, they wanted to add some more animation and detail into them, otherwise they would look lifeless. We aren't in the sprite era anymore (although Gen V and maybe IV tried to make "action sprites" for certain characters in the overworld.

Cutscenes break up the elements of gameplay into a rendered scene. It "cuts" into the scene. There are many kinds, but one thing about cutscenes is that by most standards, they play out as a rendered clip (with no interaction). Gen VI and VII have a lot of "interactive" dialogue events, but they aren't cutscenes. I'm not defending the games' use of these scenes. My point was to differentiate these dialogue with cutscenes.

People need to look at the matter from GF's view rather than assuming that all they do is just to torture you. They're not evil, but they sure don't have a reason to care about what you think unless you've bought enough of their stock to be on the board of directors.

When I was little games were like gold. You couldn't "waste" your gifted games on redundant copies or whatever the fuck. You had to make sure you absolutely wanted this game. That's the real reason why third versions were shit for kids.

By the way now that game rentals don't exist anymore WTF do kids do? I played so many games growing up that I would've never ever got to try if renting didn't exist.

I didn't like it in gen 5. I thought Bianca and Cheren were annoying as fuck. But now it's turned up to 11 with gen 7.

Am I an accomplice because I bought the games? That's the tragedy of the commons. It would be better if everyone agreed not to play so game freak had to change, but everyone still wants to play to squeeze out the ever decreasing amount of fun in each title.

But game freak can try actually making a good game without mass boycott telling them to.
