for example, if you're using swampert, you know that its only weakness is a 4x weakness to grass. hence, you need something on your team that can switch into a grass attack, like a flying type. you also know that swampert can switch into electric and rock attacks, which is useful for flying types. on switch, you don't have to think as much about that defensive synergy because you can just switch into a mon that ohkos or 2hkos whatever your opponent is about to send out.
