I mean, since Steven gets to travel the world as "Hoenn champion," May is stuck in Hoenn having to actually BE the champion, with all the pressure and responsibility that entails. It's entirely possible that she's still champion in the OP image, decades later, so why wouldn't she be nostalgic for what came before it?
