The main Legendaries are based on the Four Symbols of Chinese mythology, who are four sacred beasts who each represent a particular direction and element.
North's main Legendary is a Black Turtle who represents water, it is Ghost/Water.
South's main Legendary is a Vermilion Bird who represents fire, it is Ghost/Fire.
East's main Legendary is an Azure Serpent (in mythology it's a dragon but the Pokemon design is a snake) who represents wood, it is Ghost/Grass.
West's main Legendary is a White Tiger who represents metal, it is Ghost/Steel.
In some versions of the myth, there is a fifth Symbol that represents the earth element and the centre of the compass, the Yellow Dragon. In the base games the Yellow Dragon Pokemon is a Ghost/Ground brachiosaurus looking Legendary, but in the DLC it gains an alternate form where it becomes Ghost/Dragon and gains wings and golden armour like plating.
