My favorite region is Unova, but Alola is a close second along with Johto.
I love it because... of everything, I guess. It's a beautiful region that feels immersive - the subquests, the Pokemon you see roaming. Even the Pokemon you can interact with, while disappointing that you can catch, have grown on me. I really like the NPCs - the dialogue is obviously still clunky and NPC-ish but it feels less... fake, and the way things are structured makes me feel like it's a good place to travel through.
I know a lot of people get annoyed with the fire trial, but that seemed funny to me, and kind of charming. The Kantonian gym seemed like a jab at those tourist attractions that try to emulate experiences from another country.
There are so many different sceneries in the same region, with so many different architectural designs, I'd want to visit all of them if I could. I love the Pokemon in the area - yes, they all have the alola-speed issue, but they are interesting, and I love their design. The pokedex entries aren't copy-pasted for the first time in a long time.
Honestly, I really like the trials, and I'm glad they didn't change them for gyms. While I love gyms as well, it feels like it would take away from what characterized Alola... and the gym puzzles aren't really interesting.
I like the idea that, to be a trainer, you have to show prowess in more than just battle - and that the trials test these things.
I love the characters from Alola. I even like the story.
I just have fun creating my own character and playing about being a kid traveling there.
