Made a romhack and released it last night
Basically Emerald with all battles being Double Battles and edited trainers with new parties and a steeper difficulty curve

Thought some of you might be interested :)

Only way would be to get a Ditto and breed it.

Bug testing, not too much, had a couple of people play it while it was progressing and I tested it myself too with every change I made.

There's a couple minor things like the bag sprite is fucked and when you go into a double battle with only one Pokémon, it either clones it or puts a dead one in that can't do anything. Other than that, it SHOULD be functional.

Does it have those fanfic battles with NPCs and other trainers using legendaries? I usually don't like it and it kinda looks like a complete cockblock this way, otherwise I'm sold.

There's a couple of trainers with legendaries near the end, only story-centric ones. They're not super buffed-up though and have no EVs until post-game. Tried to make it as fair-feeling as possible.

I'll reveal a secret though, there's a way to get every legendary for yourself in this game before the E4 (minus maybe Groudon/Kyogre). Might break the difficulty a little, but I wanted to make it feel like you had similar tools to the opponents you face.

Nothing like that, I was scared of scripting because when I dabbled it broke a lot of stuff, and when I got the hang of it I couldn't be bothered. Maybe next time!

I was thinking about making something like this, but I have no experience with hacks so maybe someone else can. Something similar to your hack, but every trainer uses different formats, like doubles but also inverse if that's possible, triples in gen 6 or 5, and anything else that's available.

Moves up to gen 6 are added and old moves are updated with new effects, as per the Engine Upgrade. I didn't modify many encounters at all so I'm not sure about Clefable :( Thinking about making a 386 version some time if there's interest

Eevee is always the second starter, it's gifted to you in the script where you get your chosen starter. You can choose 5 different evolutions though ;)

Tested by myself, you have to save the game before triggering the girl warning you about professor screams, this way you can softreset for Eevee natures, otherwise the Eevee will remain set but will always allow to SR for the starter. Got a Jolly/Bold/Modest so far looking for a Timid one, Umbreon didn't seem a bad idea but I want Jolteon or Espeon with a Sassy Mudkip.

Found a glitch, foe's Vulpix took down one of my mons with Flame Burst and damaged a little the partner, gane froze there and doesn't allow me to pick a new mon to send in battle. That was the pair at north of Mauville, sadly saved only before May's battle under bridge. Honestly Celebi is making it quite easy but whatever, Roxanne was the hardest so far, her Lileep and Omanyte are definitely good counters to staters, was like wow free gift Scald will make it easy (worked with Brawly). Have no idea when you can expect event mons so wasn't abke to soft reset for Celebi, got a Mild one I think. Will be again facing May I guess so that I can remove that Vulpix faster this time.

I think that's a glitch with Flame Burst added with the battle engine upgrade, someone else got that. I'll have to just make it so that they don't have Flame Burst. It doesn't always freeze, which is weird. I'd advise frequent saving.
Awesome that you found Celebi though (wasn't too hidden.) No one else has to my knowledge. I put the legendaries in as a sort of "Your opponents (eventually) have them, so you probably should be given the chance too" so I wouldn't use them too much if you want a harder run. It's like you can get Rayquaza before the Elite 4, but it almost feels cheaty to me.

It doesn't work with the version in the original post. I apply a moemon .ips to a clean Emerald ROM as well as the patch you've made. The problem I have is that there are no wild encounters.

As far as I know, no, the new abilities were added by a patch not made by me though, so I don't know if they were made available by breeding or even if HAs are implemented

Pretty solid hack so far. I'd like to see this updated to a 386 version, and a later gen hack would be cool. I always found Double Battles more interesting, but GF ignores them outside of VGC and facilities.

There's a bug where if the trainer wasn't supposed to be a double battle, and you come into range and they "!", the game softlocks. Don't know any way around it right now. I will have a look, but I think I'd do a 3DS gen anyway.

Anyone else run into some (minor) glitches with this ROM? My backpack and TMs are a bit glitched up. Also I got through Petalburg Woods but have still only run into Hoenn Pokemon. Are others just that rare?

Good thread, OP. I was actually thinking of how the games with a Doubles focus would be like, similar to Colosseum/Gale of Darkness. I actually prefer Singles myself but so much as changing the standard of play in the main game could make it an entirely new and fresh experience.

Nothing major. When I left Petalburg a NPC gave me bullet seed. The TM has the color and description of bullet seed but is labeled as Scald. When I try to use it only my water types can learn it so I am pretty sure it is scald. My other TMs are not glitched like this.

I'm enjoying the romhack.
But fix the Synchronize glitch activating Sleep status and even poisoning Steel and Poison types.
Not sure about level scaling or just my team and their exp curve, but I've found the Winston family granny quite overlevelled (really requires to defeat all the trainers avaible including Wattson before challenging a CM Blissey + FP Gengar and mixed Arcanine + Gyarados. Maybe just my team. I recommend using Umbreon for obvious reasons, this is doubles and you need tanky support mons, Umbreon is unique (Moonlight / Babydoll Eyes, Helping Hand, Tail Whip and useful Faint Attack and Protect of course help through the game).
Also gym leaders are harder than your rival in the end, Roxanne is where you find out the hack isn't easy mode (picked Mudkip plus early mon selection is not at your advantage there). Brawly was relatively fast, then fucking Wattson and his glass cannons, can't tell if Hyper Beam works like in Gen 1 with no recharge turn if get a kills, also his Manectric phazes your own Lighting Rod, I double rused him with based bulky eggs of Skill Swap cockblocking Lighting Rod, Water Absorb and Flash Fire through game but he was hard. Flannery was alright, expected her to be full Solar Beam in Sun but Typhlosion had Thunder Punch, stalled sun forcing her to heal and Toxic Seeds + Protect.
But real talk what the fuck Maxie's first battle is insane, he is 8 levels above your team of 6 and leads with 2 fast special attackers with the rest being tanks, total powerhouse, also save before interacting with the meteorite, I have defeated the legendary plus it's not a good one for double. Raikou was more predictable to find, haven't found Suicune but I bet it's in the wrecked ship or some waterfall location.

Glitches with moves are out of my hands, I'm not a talented coder and they were all implemented in a patch that's currently being completely rebooted. Might come back when they release the new, apparently better version and reimplement it.

Winston family is an extra challenge, it's optional and definitely too tough without either preparing or coming back later, that's how I crafted it anyway.

Unfortunately due to the limitations of Gen 3, I can't choose enemy abilities which sucks ass. The AI is also stupid as fuck even after being reworked to apparently use the new moves properly. Flannery has SolarBeam, she's just thick. Weather stuff just isn't picked up enough by the AI which is disappointing.

Maxie was definitely made to be challenging, in your opinion is it unfairly tough? I wanted it to never feel unfair, just challenging, but I may have gone over/underboard in some places, plus late game edits of TMs and such may have affected balance. I also didn't have many people testing it for balance, so I'd like to adjust it possibly with more feedback.

Overall, I'd love to do a 3DS romhack of possibly XY to fully make use of the new Pokémon, movesets, and hopefully good AI

Team is Umbreon (BDE, Protect, Moonlight, Faint Attack, best Gengar and Zam remover for me, I don't trust Tyranitar), Breloom (Cut, Brick Break that used to be Rock Smash that was actually very useful too, Leech Seed, Protect had Flash that helped a lot too), Exeggcute (kek pretty good eggs, evolved into tree just before Winona and walled her with BDE Umbreon and Breloom, ridiculous, knows Giga Drain, only know because was part of a double Leech Seed stall before, Skill Swap to fuck with opp threats and get rid of their immunities, Toxic and Protect), Swampert (EQ, Scald, Rock Slide, Protect), Manectric (Thunderbolt, Protect, Toxic and filler sometime Rain Dance to deal with Sand and Sun), Azumarill (Aqua Tail, Play Rough, Strength, Protect).
Basically I kept the early route mons...not evwn a Breloom fan. They are all around L.52 despite opps being even around L.58. Doing alright after leaving the hellish L.30s and the tougher selection of mons vs shit like Gengar & Bliss or Maxie.

Winston family is all pranks and fun until the granny appears, the Medicham always fails for Protect bait and crashes. Mostly needs to clean all the avaible trainers before their challenge. I look for all trainers anyway but Maxie was quite a battle due to the need of extra grinding vs low level wildmons if you want to tank anything from him and KO or 2HKO with rkills back, thanks god Quick Claw Swampert + Protect lures helped, had to evolve it, weakened team also had that Entei out of nowhere to deal with. Shelly is easier because le no special bulk shark and crab faec and basically no synergy.

Classic Gardevoir, Exploud and Magneton + following gens Machamp, Zam and MrMime to better the voice/screens/electric appliances theme, I just see the autistic duck spamming Amnesia and Jynx getting oneshot or Wobbu stalled. Wobbu prob needs max speed at this point.

Honestly, seeing Smeargle + Slaking is easy to translate as "remove slow dog or get removed", so it's just Smeargle having low chances to deliver. Try some Worry Seed or something else, can Linoone do it? Kecleon with Skill Swap seems more reliable.

Two or three trainers have quit the battle or something, I do speed up the game sometimes so didn't read the message, trainer whited out or whatever, they were losing anyway. Basically you end staying in front of them and they count as defeated. Didn't bother with them, they'd have lost anyway.

So I tried a Nuzlocke on this, and did fairly well until I got to the Winstrate grandma. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that a Gengar/Blissey/Arcanine/Gyarados battle before the third gym is kind of bollocks, doubly so since all of her 'mons outleveled mine.

Handled Gengar and Blissey by abusing AI targeting and Protect, but at this point in the game there's virtually nothing that can take on double Intimidate and White Herb Overheat without sacking half your team. I'm all for increased difficulty, but goodness, I didn't even have Blaziken yet.

Are there any other surprise challenges like that? I'd like to do at least a couple more Nuzlocke attempts, the rest of the game didn't really feel unfair (well, as long as you know the targeting mechanics and are judicious with Protect use). I really hate excessive grinding though, so maybe not if the level curve is going to get tough enough to warrant it.

Assuming Moltres is in the VIctory Road since Fiery Path is emptby and volcano was for Entei. Articuno should be Shoal Cave lower floors and Zapdos...have no clue, New Mauvile already had Raikou, probably will be there too.

Will challenge the league tomorrow. Anyway there are 2 Swimmers that are underlevelled near the quiz master, also underlevelled trainers at Meteor Falls and Senpai & Kohei girls in front of Shoal Cave also have low levels.

I see Sootopolis selling some items, PP Up and PP Max would be okay if sold in Evergrande City, you will still need to buy Elixir & co anyway since I expect Pressure mons on the first 3 elite teams.
