That might have been the original idea, but the anime's backstory for Mewtwo (it being a clone) has long since supplanted the idea of Mew actually giving birth.

100% incorrect. Cloning of multicellular lifeforms in our day and age require implantation of the modified egg cell into an animal's womb for gestation. The animal gives birth to the clone.

The original Japanese text does not mention Mew giving birth. Mewtwo was intended to be a Mew they genetically modified.
