So, been thinking about Gen 8 with the move to the Switch, and I think Gamefreak is going to change to a more DLC model for it.
I don't see it being riddled with microtransactions, but I do see them doing in DLC packs post release that add things in. Things like the ability to travel to other regions, a story episode for that region, brand new forms, brand new Megas, clothes, etc. Basically serve the purpose of a 3rd Version without being a full price game, which GF has been moving away from in general. New games would just be used for "changing characters" like with a remake or something.
If they do add brand new stuff, what I also see them doing is patching in compatibility. In that, to obtain them yourself, you could buy the DLC, but if you don't, you can still get them through trading .
Now, I don't think that GF will lock any individual Pokemon behind a paywall, however, I do think that the Mythicals of Gen 8 will not be in the base game and will get patched in later before they're given away in the usual way. Because GF never wants them known prior to when they reveal them, as they're not supposed to exist until then.
USUM itself was the most proto-DLC of any of the versions with added stuff, being the first to add in brand new Pokemon, but they have honestly been moving this way for a long time with each additional release in a generation adding in new forms and other added stuff. DLC, for both good and bad, is just the industry standard these days, and I don't see GF staying away from it when they finally make the leap for the main series to go from handheld to a full console. We'll probably get the basic two versions still but with the DLC adding in post release content every so often.
