I feel like XY are sort of uninspired. It starts with the massive Kanto nostalgia, with the exact copy of Viridian Forest and the starters, as well as Kanto Pokemon being the most common in the game. They also do nothing with a fairly interesting story concept, the new Pokemon barely appear and get little to no focus, even moreso than in Gen 7, and after the third gym all pacing goes off and you barrel through them all until the last three where they're more paced again. Also shoving the entire Team Flare plot between gyms 7 and 8 just like in Sinnoh is worse here because there's actually quite a bit to go after that until the end of the game. Besides the Fairy type and the Megas which are mostly downplayed, the whole game feels very safe.
The wide Pokemon variety is it's biggest strength, and makes it fun for nuzlockes. It's also got some fun and unique areas like Reflection Cave and the cute Dendemille Town.
