A lot of new designs wouldn't translate well into pixelart and 2D. Despite that the DS and 3DS limited them a lot in terms of what they could do, why should they go back to 2D now when they have the switch hardware?

can't go back to the original style now that we've been spoiled with animation from the looks of it, and I think Gamefreak is committed to 3D

Not as much as you for liking those abominations. Pokemon has always looked like shit in every system it was in.

Golden Sun was on the GBA and made Pokemon shit itself both in graphics and gameplay. There are many GBC games that look better than GSC. Even a fucking obscure game like Dinosaur's managed to have good battle sprites AND backgrounds.
