Side content still remains king. Contests and Pokeathlon can't be beat.
You're much better off playing other RPG series if you want a challenging AI arena type mode. Dragon Quest Monsters comes to mind.

Pokemon games have bad stories, to me the main game lives and dies on challenge and the size of the dex. BW2 have a good difficulty throughout and a really fun variety of guys to use. XY, SM, USUM, also have a good variety, XY moreso, but the experience share trivalizes them. Its basically mandatory for XY with its level curve being impossible without it, and SM and USUM are pretty easy even with it off.

I didn't buy USUM, I also canceled my pre-order when ORAS was confirmed for no battle frontier. I got SM hearing that it improve from XY, which it did, but it's still nowhere near the levels of gen 3-5

I won't say it's bad but honestly after replaying Emerald, I realized there's only 2 good facilities and rest are stupid. The battle dome and palace in particular are fucking retarded. I'd say the Pyramid and Factory are the only standouts.

It's just a bunch of NPC battles with redone sprites and a few lines of dialogue. Gen 5 fags act like it's the greatest thing ever but it's just fan service with little substance.

Emerald's was nice, Gen 4's was meh, Gen 1's was barely there, Gen 2 was slightly there. Gen 5 probably has the best story. Gen 6 had an alright story. Gen 7's story is alright but mitigated by how fucking awful the first few hours are.
