Source? I’m still dissapointed. The Memory Link was the perfect chance to upgrade the Red at Mt. Silver fight with Hilbert/Hilda using the exact same team they finished the game with (or most recent Hall of Fame). Also sad since you can battle Cheren and Bianca with their original B/W teams.

No, because companies are too scared to put content that could be missed in a game. What made Red a great encounter is just that. You encountered him. By all intensive purposes the game was finished after you beat the elite four with all 16 badges.

Pokemon is too linear, gamefreak and most game companies in general would ruin the surprise as soon as they could to generate hype.

But yeah part of the reason why Red was so mindblowing as a kid was because I played Pokemon Crystal blind and didn't look up anything on the internet.

Modern Gamefreak would've spoiled it or someone else surely would have.

The final battle against N and Ghetsis especially were really good fights in Black/White. Especially Ghetsis, he really pushed my shit in even when I had the box legendary. Helps that both fights had kickass themes.

Yeah I fucking loved that in BW.
I thought it was neat as fuck that the villanous team hijacked the champion fight and that the game ended with you beating them instead of them being defeated mid to late game.
Honestly BW is probably my favorite base game.
Too bad it gets a lot of undeserved shit, I can get not liming it but actually thinking it is the worst game in the franchise is beyond me.

Because Gold/Silver/Crystal are the objective peak of the series because Gamefreak are extremely mediocre developers. Don't forget too, they don't even get full credit for GSC because it's mostly thanks to Iwata being a programming god and generally cool dude that GSC was able to be as amazing as it was.

The Elite Four is part of the stated purpose of every game that you're basically handheld through, and Kanto after that was forced on you if you ever continued after the credits.

Compared to that going back to access Mt. Silver was really optional. Not hard to find, but not handheld like the rest.

Even if I didn't love it when I played, in retrospect B/W is probably the second best in the series.
In addition to what you said, the biggest thing for me was 100% new pokemon during the main game. Especially in recent gens, the reliance on older pokemon is fucking pathetic, B/W was such a breath of fresh air.

I still think G/S/C is the best considering it was an objective improvement over R/B/Y in every way and is to this day the only game that didn't remove features.

Johto in it its intact form couldn't have existed without Iwata, so even if you didn't like Kanto he's still responsible for all of the base Johto content.

Imagine if Gold and Silver ran like a modern pokemon game with frame drops and the like instead. Gamefreak is full of horribly mediocre programmers on the whole and it took someone like Iwata to bail them out.

Kanto was a bit disappointing but I think given the technical limitations of the time getting it in was one hell of an achievement.

I can respect that opinion, GSC was really cool.
To me gen 5 felt like it was the last time gamefreak actually tried.
I thought only having new pokemon was really refreshing as well, it never bothered me, because I always make it a point to only use native mons when I play pokemon

Yeah Kanto was rather sparse and it was quite obvious they weren't able to put a lot of detail into it for whatever reason, but it was enjoyable to explore anyway and see what had changed in the four year timeframe, despite it everything bar Blue and Red being criminally underleveled.

While the world tournament wasn't very "personal", it gave all of the leaders and champions animated sprites, extremely powerful teams and remixed music that still kept the spirit of the gens they came from.

Gamefreak was really worried about adding anything new to the established 151 at the time. They wanted to do everything to bridge the gap between the old and new. That's why gentoo is filled with references to genwun. It also started out as a straight sequel and just being Pokemon 2 before deciding to go with the idea of Gold/Silver

I played Emerald way before Ruby/Sapphire and didn't know that Steven was supposed to be the champion so when I found him in the cave and defeated him it didn't give me the same impression as when I tried to beat Red at all. And I say tried because I never managed to beat Red until SM but I beat Steven without even trying or even knowing he could be fought i the first place.

Honestly I wouldn't praise the shitty cover legendaries of Unova, they were dead weight in those battles and even in the post game. Battle with Ghetsis was much better than N, have no clue why his team was so shit in BW2 instead.
