I miss the hype of playing RB/GS and not knowing what I'm the game. Also the build up of the Cinnabar Island laboratory talking about Mew and Mewtwo, culminating in Mewtwo's escape and realizing that thing is out there somewhere. Also when they mentioned 150 Pokemon but we knew because of Mew that there was even more, which led us to wonder how far the rabbit hole went.

Admittingly, that kind of model might be somewhat controversial, but I personally think it's fine in Pokemon since it encourages the whole trading aspect.
Gen III gets a lot of flack for the fact that you need to buy the spinoffs to get every Pokemon, but I thought that was kind of cool too in it's own way, and breeding was still always a thing.
