So I'm buying a 2DS and I want to try out one of these new Pokemon games. The last game I played was Black.

Do I want to buy regular Sun / Moon or Ultra Sun / Moon? The descriptions of these games are confusing as fuck so I can't tell if Ultra is a direct sequel or just an "upgrade" like Crystal, Emerald, etc.

Go with Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon. It's basically the third version like Crystal or Emerald. It's not a direct sequel.

There is literally almost no point to playing SM now that USUM is out. It's more of a direct upgrade than any other third version before it sans B2W2, as older third versions lacked much things that their primary pair equivalents had than USUM does with SM. The only gameplay experiences you will miss out on are Motherbeast Lusamine, some Island Scan lines, the postgame quest with Looker, Anabel and the Ultra Beasts, and the Zygarde cell hunt that nobody liked.

Only buy S/M or US/UM if you know what you're getting in to. These games introduced a shift in focus for the series, and as such they removed a lot of key elements that you may have come to expect in a Pokémon game. Be prepared for a lot of cutscenes, handholding, and a major focus on plot/characters. The gameplay is much weaker than previous iterations, and if your favourite parts of Pokémon were completing puzzles or exploring optional areas, then you will be disappointed.

Are you guys just having a laugh, or is it really that bad?

I bought one of those brick 2DS on sale that comes prepackaged with NSMB2. Money's no real object, but I'm Canadian and 3DS prices are abysmal. I guess it runs that bad I'll just return it and buy a 3DS XL full price.

2DS and 3DS are so shit at running SM/USUM that when you launch the games, the system literally reboots in order to enter a special OS mode where more RAM can be dedicated to the games, because otherwise they would not run at all. this takes about 1 minute, after which you are free to play at 15fps

when you quit the game, the 3DS/2DS is still in this mode, so it needs to reboot again to load the OS normally

if this sounds good to you then go ahead. if not, then buy a NEW 3DSXL (not as in brand new, the system is literally called "new" thanks to the usual genius Nintendo marketing)
