There's minor gameplay differences like some areas are completely different aesthetically (and one area in the first games that's different aesthetically and mechanically), while the Black games favour Rotation Battles and the White games favour Triple Battles.
But you're getting the same experience overall and you can't go wrong with either. You could boil it down to whichever legendary you think is cooler, or whichever aesthetics you think are cooler (Black has more future and modern aesthetics in a few areas, White has more rural, natural aesthetics in a few areas). Just remember to stick with the same colour, so Black -> Black 2, or White -> White 2.
