Can someone explain to me what the ranks are and why I should add people? Just got to the rainbow rocket part with it

The Pokémon the game gives you if you don't add people will ALWAYS be level 50, so when you rank up, the NPC Pokémon will always be left behind, so it's mandatory that you add people that are high ranked.
