Gen 8 will either be based in an ultra beast land, or we'll never hear anything more from them again, effectively making them another generational gimmick. I think they would make for a fantastic MD or ranger game.

If there's a mystery dungeon game still in store this gen I can see them playing a part in the story somehow. Aside from that they'll probably just be shoehorned into later gens in the postgame legendary hunt

Gem 8 would probably introduce a new weird ass mechanic where you can fuse your Pokémon into one.

Gamefreak was hiring designers a while back to create “cartoon-like super deformed characters, monsters, and item models” for “a globally popular RPG.” This was most likely the new game for the Switch. So don't count out a UB land or more UB's for Gen 8.
