People are saying that USUM wasn't worth the $40 and that's more of an update with others saying it is worth. I'm stuck between the two.

Pros

Ultra Space
New Characters
Larger Soundtrack
Rainbow Rocket
Hau is improved (sort of)
Cons
Story is Largely unchanged
Lusamine's Characters falls flat during the Climax
URS tells and doesn't show exposition

What do you think?

Well it's more replayable than SM and l'd say the little improvements add up enough. They are definitely worth it. Now that they are out I'd say SM are of less value. These are now the definitive Gen VII titles.

It's not worth the price tag because most of it is just SM all over again. You're essentially dropping $40 for a little bit of plot involving Necrozma, some awkward iphone minigames, and a gimped battle factory. It's more akin to $10-15 DLC than the actual full cart price.

It's not worth the $40 it costs but I'd argue that no Pokemon game has been worth the cost since Gen 2. Technology surpassed these games' basic structure long ago. Without the nostalgia factor these games would have been left dead in the water years ago. It's why I'm really hoping for some innovation in Gen 8 now that they're on the least restrictive hardware yet.

I have seen this point made quite often, but if we wouldn't have SM, her character 'ark' would be perfectly servicable for a pokémon game.

You're right. My biggest gripe by far about USM is that it keeps basically the same plot as SM. I think it would have been great to play if I hadn't played SM.
But I still think it's fair to judge it as an independent game as well.

I think it's a mistake to get into the competitive scene in any pokemon game. It's almost entirely luck based, and the sheer amount of rules and tweaks communities like smogon have to put on to "fix" battling is a huge red flag that shit's fucked and it's not going to get any better, so you may as well not bother.

Play single player pokemon to fill time or when you want a relaxing, quick game to play. Sadly Gamefreak can't be trusted even to provide that.

As always, the third version is only really worth getting if you skipped the first versions. It's a scummy tactic, but it's never going to go away. At least it seems to be improving, USUM has added more than other third versions and isn't a trainwreck like BW2.

Smogon doesn't make the definitive rules of the game and there's an entire ladder on showdown dedicated to playing freely with no restrictions. Pokemon isn't entirely luck based either as you can generally gauge what kind of Pokemon your opponent is running just by its species because not a lot of Pokemon are versatile enough to be played five different ways.
