Pokemon Mystery Dungeon's formula just doesn't work that well. It's a weird chimera of Shiren and Pokemon that simply doesn't feel good.
The developers simply cannot make an established and satisfying difficulty level when the player either has zero extra lives or fucking thirty of them.
Essentially they need to turn extra lives into their own mechanic, and not a throwaway item you can fill your inventory with
I think they did a good job with making Super more of a roguelike for kids than an RPG with roguelike aspects, and I think if they refine that formula, PMD can actually start working as a gameplay formula rather than being an awkward concession to both of the series root titles.
I kinda hope the Connection Orb system is either really refined or completely dropped by the next game though. I miss filling up teams with nicknamed and importantly static pokemon.
