Mega Evolution is better than Z moves. A lot of people are still hoping for megas of their favorite mons/relatively shit mons. Nobody is pining for a new z-move.

I like that every new generation (at least if the last two are indicative of a trend) is introducing a new gimmick like mega evolution/z moves. I think it keeps the game more interesting, because it adds a couple of new layers of strategy.

Balancing, on the other hand, is a huge issue and GF has done a shitty job of that with megas, at least. Still, I think the more mega evolutions they add, the more variation is possible which helps to alleviate the issue with teams being homogeneous because there's nothing more viable.

I like Megas but the same problems present with Z-Moves are on a far bigger extreme with Megas. Firstly, a Pokemon's straight fucked if they don't get a mega. Sure Z-Moves can be used better by the already good Pokemon, but at least a shitmon can use it if they want to and are perfectly fine for in-game use. Second, there's the inevitable case that just like Z-Moves some Pokemon's megas will never be as good as others - there'll always be a Mega Audino to sit at the back of the pack and they'll most likely never be rebalanced. Then there's Item bloat in that every single Mega needs their own signature item and they'll need to be given out somehow every single generation for every Pokemon that gets one - it's a huge mess.
Z-Moves could definitely use some mechanic overhauls so that they're more universally accessible but I feel that they're much better long-term alternatives than Megas. Exclusive Z-Moves are far worse than Megas, though.

Part of what causes that is the fact that you can't really do much fanart for a move. You can draw a form doing anything but with a move you're limited to always depicting the same thing, with a few exceptions like the giant thing summoned by the Tapu Z-Move. Plus some moves have changed drastically between generations, so we've grown accustomed not to get attached to the move animations.

The main thing Z-Moves have over Megas is being able to spread the love. If Megas were the gimmick this gen they probably would've just ignored Solgaleo and Lunala, but with Z-Moves they were able to make them share with Necrozma. I wish instead of signature Z-Crystals we got more widespread but not quite generic Z-Crystals. Like say the Pikachu/Alolan Raichu Z-Crystals were shared by all Pikaclones. Then you could have Z-Moves for each of the 3 starter types like Z-Blast Burn for the Fire starters, etc.

The major gameplay changes of special split changed the game for every mon, Abilities changed the game for every mon, and Phys/Special split changed the game for every mon.

The only thing I'll say for Z-moves is that like those, it gave EVERY Pokemon something new to play with, even though it's true it helped already strong Pokemon more (let's be honest though, you can't balance a game with essentially a roster of hundreds of characters).

Other than that I'll take the "hand-crafted" Megas over Z-moves any day though. For me, even the shitty ones like Audino are at least fun to play around with.

I also hate how some of the newer things they're adding are exclusive from each other. We have this weird mish-mash of Megas, Sig Z-Moves and Regional Formes now. Does this mean Pokemon like Ninetales and the Alolan Starters can never get Megas? Just feels like a real clusterfuck.

Z-moves on there own are not a bad idea, but they have an inherite flaw that should've been seen from far away: it makes strong pokemon even stronger while weak pokemon only slightly better, but no way near the same level as dominating forces such as Volcarona or Salamence. Yes, Meges were mostly dictated by popularity, those mons that really got them and desperately needed a boost received it, thing such as Mawile, Sableye, Beedrill, Lopunny, Altaria, Manectric, mons you would never think could ever be meta or even good enough to hold there weigh with the big boys have made the impossible possible. So yeah, a whole I prefer Megas over Z-moves by a long shot. It's nice to have both, but if ones of them ever returns, I'll take the Megas.

Plus, it's physically impossible to make everything equal in power, at least in our current position in the series. There will always and I mean always gonna be something better than something else just because of a certain quirk.

To be fair, signature Z-Moves had a chance of being unique and interesting, but most of them are just pretty damage nukes like the rest of Z-Moves. Some of them even LOSE the special effects the move its based off of have.

Z moves are much less exciting than megas. At least with megas, about half of them weren't disgustingly OP and were given to pokemon that deserved them, but Z moves are just glorified elemental gems that drag out battles even longer. Not to mention that they see these as a suitable replacement for megas, am i supposed to be excited because Mimikyu's Z move is a whole 15BP stronger than the normal fairy crystal?

Also it looks fucking awful how many of the animations are just the pokemon standing there, despite every pokemon having a running animation in the game

Nah, Z-moves rectified GF's big problem. They can only improve so many Pokemon per generation because of how many there are, but there's an even bigger amount of them that aren't even viable to use. Ones that have Megas are always gonna use that mega stone with them, and still dominate the meta.

Whereas Megas broke into Uber, and even threw Rayquaza into a tier of its own. Just from the gameplay perspective alone, it's obvious that they weren't balanced.

Legendaries and pseudos shouldn't have gotten megas. Stuff like Beedrill and Medicham are perfect fits, not fucking Rayquaza. With Z moves, every pokemon on earth is already pretty frail when you compare to other rpg's, most things can't take more than 2 hits without being in red health or outright dying.

Yeah, picking off popularity was a bad idea. And if they plan to add more, they need to get rid of each specific stone and just give you the mega ring in postgame or whatever and let it mega evolve anything, because there's already too many stones.

Nah, youre dumb. I use fighting in mono, and Kommo-O was decent before its Z-Move. Its a decent bit bulkier than other fighting types with its dragon typing, especially with its z-move boosts. Clanging Scales also hits pretty hard, and flamethrower, flash cannon, and focus miss make for pretty great coverage.

Other than that, Keldeo and Infernape are definitely good picks for special fighting types.
