Play as a guy and you basically have a self insert or avatar player character.
Play as a girl and just imagine you're traveling with her or something. After all, there are games without avatar or self insert characters, set protagonists that are of either gender. You don't necessarily need to self insert or imagine yourself AS them, you could just be along for the ride as an independent audience, like you're imagining that you're witnessing it all happen.
