Also there should be at least a handful of regular pokemon (perhaps just starters) just to keep the games linked, and any additional ultra beasts added, need to be obtainable in mainline pokemon games, even if it is only by transferring them from the ultra beast games. That way the games can be separate but still clearly related.
Perhaps it could be more like the SMT series. The beasts have a less cutesy and bizarre appearance that would be suitable for a more mature series. Not saying it should be super edgy, but the sense of danger should be present. You arent some kid going for his pokemon badges, but rather delving into an alternate universe with very strange and unknown creatures.
