GBA FEs are fine, as is FE15 and, arguably, 13 (depends on how much you enjoy shipping and waifus). Fates, on the other hand, is absolutely not worth it, even for shippingfags. There are exactly 2 things good about Fates:
1. A better Pair-Up system that isn't outright broken like Awakening's
2. The OST

Echoes' story is light-years better, but pairings/ships are much more rigid. There's no extensive supports like the other 2 3DSFEs, but the gameplay and general quality of the characters more than makes up for it. If you're used to the old gameplay tropes it takes a while to get used to Echoes, but goddamn the gameplay is fantastic, even if map design is dated as hell. This FE fan recommends that with full marks.

While Conquest's gameplay is, as you so eloquently put, godlike, ignoring the story and, more importantly, the shipping fuckery just isn't possible unless you want to gimp yourself and ruin the balanced gameplay from tough to absolutely brutal. And if you NEED to have your experience bogged down by fanfic-tier writing and 1.5 dimensional characters just to play it adequately, it's not really worth it.
I won't deny Conquest has the absolute best maps on the 3DS and some truly inspired win conditions, however.
