If anything it should be Rock/Psychic. Learns 13 Psychic-type moves versus 7 Steel. Just give it a Rock-type version of Gyro Ball to compensate for no STAB on Gyro Ball. Plus its counterpart got a signature move so why the fuck not?

Just because it's an inanimate object come to life doesn't mean it should always be Ghost. In that case then Grimer and Vanillite should be Ghost as well.

I would have preferred Rock/Ghost (and Fire/Fairy for Blacephalon), but then again Nihilego's Rock/Poison instead of Psychic/Poison and Celesteela could still make sense as Steel/Grass or Grass/Flying.

Nihilego isn't made of soft or fleshy material, it's actually made of hard material like a moving glass which Pokemon associates with the rock type because of the mineral connotations.

It's stated on it's blurb on the official website and in this artbook that it's made of a glass-like substance. Call it a bit of a stretch if you want, but I like that detail and it gives it a unique, interesting typing.

Oh yeah! Ultra Deep Sea is the place where Nihilego lives, and all the structures look a lot like jellyfish polyps. Nihilego, Celesteela, Kartana, and Xurkitree all seem to just "grow" rather than evolve from something.

Remember in Sun and Moon when Lillie says that the air in the Ultra Space cavern is really thick and hard to breathe? And the place is called Ultra Deep Sea in USUM. It's like a coral reef made of glass, and it's full juvenile and adult jellyfish!
