Araquanid is a bitch, but it is a good wake-up call. I hope we get more unrelenting early bosses in future games.

I'd prefer if Gamefreak stepped up their AI a bit so that trainer bosses could be an actual challenge. One thing the totems make clear with their reinforcements is that double battles really is how the game should be played even in story mode. Colosseum had the series' hardest bosses after all.

Definitely was a big wake-up call for me. Up until this point, I had been treating Ultra Moon as just a second playthrough of Moon with some extra shit. Then suddenly this happens, and my preparation to one-shot Wishiwashi blows up in my face. It certainly helps that Araquanid not only has coverage for every one of its weaknesses, but his call ins can slow your Pokemon down (Dewpider with Sticky Web and Masquerain with Stun Spore) and speed him up (Masquerain).

Colosseum was artificial difficulty. You had a small, shitty selection of mons and then had new mechanics thrown into your face right away.
SM and USUM did it far better with the Totem battles. You start off with the Gumshoos/Raticate battle which is fairly simple, but lets you get a firm idea of what the concept is. Then you're given a wider selection of mons to choose from and train, and THEN they ramp up the difficulty.

So far, only Marowak has given me trouble.
Raticate went down to my Litten's Double Kick.
For Araquanid, I used the hat Pikachu with his Z-Crystal. Thundershock on the first turn to make it waste its berry, and then used the Z-Move on the next turn.
Then Marowak happened. I had a Jolly gift Rockruff with Bite and Rock Slide, and thought I'd be okay. He used Detect on the first turn, and then called in Salazzle, and everything went to shit. I don't remember how exactly I won, just that I eventually won.

Most of us didn't expect it or bother to make actual strategic teams because we don't take the easy ass story mode as seriously as you.

When they made the bosses actually have some competency and level equalization it really through us off. I was expecting my owl to just sweep but the Aurora beans just killed him.

I beat the Totem Togedemaru because it struggled itself to death, I was flinched 9 turns in a row, tormented so I couldn't use my super effective attack every turn and when I did get to use it, it was into a bounce or a spiky shield, that was an infuriating fight
